Un Bestiario es una colección de pequeñas descripciones sobre todo tipo de animales, reales e imaginarios, pajaros y cualquier otro, acompañado por una explicación moralizante. Esta descripción del mundo natural nunca fue pensada como un texto cientifico y no debe ser leida como tal. Algunas observaciones pueden ser reales pero son dadas con la misma importancia que los cuentos totalmente fabulosos. El Bestiario aparece en este formato ya elaborado en el siglo XII, como una compilación de varias fuentes cercanas, principalmente el Physiologus. Una gran parte del encanto de ellos se deriva del humor y la imaginación de las ilustraciones, pintadas parcialmente por placer pero justificadas como una herramienta didáctica

En la Edad Media, historias de animales eran muy populares en toda Europa, África del Norte y el Medio Oriente. La gente de la época eran, por supuesto, depende de los animales salvajes y domésticos para su supervivencia, y por lo tanto tenía un interés evidente en los animales que les rodean. Pero hay más a él que apenas un requisito para el conocimiento de los animales que conocían y utilizaban; hay un aspecto netamente espiritual e incluso mística de la tradición de los animales de la Edad Media.
